Often referred to as a "big dog in a little dog's body", the pug is full of personality. Pugs are intelligent. They make great watchdogs, but poor guard dogs, as they love people. Grooming for pugs is relatively easy. Pugs will shed, so they need a good brushing once or twice a week, or a rub down with a love glove which is our pugs' favorite. The ears need to be kept clean, and the face wrinkles need to be cleaned weekly as well. I recommend an ear cleaning solution you can purchase from your vet or groomer. You only need to place a few drops in the ear, fold the ear flap down to cover the ear canal, then gently rub the outside of the earflap. Then release, and your pug will naturally shake its head to clear the solution out while shaking out the dirt and grime at the same time. Nose wrinkles can be cleaned with a wash cloth and warm water with a little soap, be sure to wipe with a cloth with only warm water afterward in order to remove any soap. You can also use a baby wipe to wipe the wrinkles clean. Pugs do not require haircuts, just nail trimming. If you live in a hot and/or humid climate, your pug will need to be indoors with air conditioning most of the time. Because they are a snub-nosed breed they are not able to cool themselves down easily. It is a good idea to keep an icepack handy incase your pug overheats. If it does, apply the icepack to the underside of the neck to help your pug cool down. A trip to the vet is required if there are serious signs of heat stress. The easiest way to avoid this in the first place is to walk your pug early in the morning, or in the evening during the cooler parts of the day. On the warmest of days, keep your pug indoors except for potty breaks. Pugs love snow and like to get playtime in the winter. They often love to romp and jump through the snow and can usually handle the cold well. Many people say that pugs hate exercise and only like to lay around the house, but it's not true! Most pugs are always up for a good adventure. Some of the pug puppies I have sold have gone on to become jogging companions, and some have become lap dogs. Either way, pugs make great best friends. Pug Health Concerns Although pugs are generally sturdy little dogs, as with any breed, they are prone to their own sets of problems. Some things you may need to be careful to avoid are eye injuries and stomach upsets. Because of their slightly protruding eyes, pugs need to have a safe environment to avoid corneal scratches. This is why dewclaws are removed on all of my pups. Also, pugs will eat anything they see on the floor! Make sure you don't drop pills, candy, or anything that might be harmful to your pug on the floor. It is amazing how fast a pug can move when it thinks it hears the sound of food. Mange can develop, especially during times of immune system challenges, such as vaccinations during puppyhood. Mange is a treatable skin condition that is more prevalent in pugs than other breeds. Pugs can also be prone to knee problems, other eye problems, stenotic nares, (nostril issues related to their short snouts), and a new problem breeders are seeing in pugs is Wobbler's syndrome. These problems are not common, but they are things to be aware of. Generally speaking, pugs are very sturdy and healthy dogs. By taking the best care of your pug as possible by feeding a quality food, getting vaccinations, and maintaining a proper weight for your pug's lifestyle, your pug should enjoy a long happy life with you.
